The epiglottis acts as a cover for the orifice of the inferior respiratory tract. It closes to prevent food from entering the respiratory system. It opens to allow air to enter or leave. It is made up of elastic cartilage. The epiglottis is attched superiorly to the hyoid bone by ligaments, and inferiorly to the thyroid cartilage also by ligaments.
